Grounded in Resilience - The Anchor of Faith
The idea that we can control everything that affects our business is simply not realistic. Success has a habit of convincing us we are in control, and as we become more proficient in leadership, management and forecasting we can be better prepared for unexpected circumstances, but the idea of control is an illusion. The only one who is really in control is God himself. That is why when we anchor ourselves to God, our faith in him becomes a key component to becoming a more resilient leader.
One definition of resilience describes it as our ability to ‘bounce back’ – the speed at which you return to confidence after a setback is a sign of maturity. When we anchor ourselves to our performance, our profits or success, the “bounce back” becomes reliant on circumstances. What if there was a better anchor? One that wasn’t hooked into circumstances.
"We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat in the heavenly realm beyond the sacred threshold."
Hebrews 6:19 TPT
Your resilient bounce back is far more effective when you are anchored to an eternal hope, not one that is temporal. It instills a confidence that God is in control despite setbacks and problems. This bigger perspective trusts God’s plan and purpose for your life.
Case Study
The story of Joseph in the book of Genesis is a powerful story of resilience. Despite being sold into slavery by his brothers, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph remained steadfast in his faith and integrity. Genesis 50:20 (NIV) recounts his perspective: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." Joseph’s resilience not only led to his personal success but also the survival of an entire nation. Joseph’s unwavering commitment to God and His purpose allowed him to navigate the lowest points of his life. Joseph confidently lived out his dream and despite having the opportunity to shrink back and succumb to his circumstances continued to do what he was good at. God used Joseph’s gift to set him up for massive success. Joseph became the second most powerful person in the nation securing His own success but also the greater plan of God rescuing many lives. This story illustrates how maintaining integrity, faith, and a positive perspective through adversity can lead to extraordinary outcomes in business.
When we anchor our confidence in God’s work and not ours, we can approach challenges and trials with a new perspective. We can trust that God’s plan is bigger, and like Joseph be confident that God will use what was intended for harm for our good. An anchor is designed to steady and secure something, to keep it fixed in place. Business can be volatile with ups and downs, when we are anchored - we don’t have to live the same way.
