The Power of Proximity: An Atmosphere of Growth

How do you stay sharp in business, faith and life? One way that I consistently find value in is by setting aside time to get away and spend time with high-level, like-minded people. The atmosphere that this produces rarely fails to inspire, challenge and focus me. I had the opportunity to do this recently and it was just what I needed. This is what I loved about the atmosphere I was in; I found myself in a room with people who had accomplished a lot for the kingdom of God. They were successful people who were generous in sharing their wisdom. Their experiences and insights were a great source of wisdom I could draw upon.

When you intentionally surround yourself with high-level, like-minded people—those who dream big, work hard, and live with integrity—you’re placing yourself in an atmosphere where excellence is the norm. Their example challenges you to stretch beyond comfort zones, to think bigger, and to operate with greater discipline. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Growth doesn’t happen in isolation; it happens in the friction of conversation, collaboration, and accountability.

In business, these relationships become a source of innovation and resilience. Being around others who have walked further down the path gives you access to wisdom you can’t Google. They can spot blind spots, inspire creativity, and encourage bold moves when fear wants to hold you back.

In faith, these relationships strengthen your walk with God. When you witness people who integrate their beliefs into their work, lead with servant hearts, and prioritize eternal values over temporary gains, it deepens your own conviction. Hebrews 10:24 urges us to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.”

The Power of a Testimony

I was particularly inspired by one person I met. He was an accomplished person who travelled extensively to build the kingdom of God. Listening to him talk inspired me. There are many ways that you can grow, but a conversation like this conveys so much more than words. I could see his attitude, sacrifice and passion. It was a wisdom that was as much caught as it was taught. It was a great reminder that the company you keep shapes your mindset, fuels your growth, and refines your character. God used his story, his testimony to speak to mine even though we are on different career paths.

“When we share a testimony, we are loaning our faith to others. When we listen to a testimony, we are borrowing faith from others.” ~ Mark Batterson

These opportunities don’t just happen. As I reflected on my experience, I thought of the preparation that preceded the week. I had to intentionally create time in my schedule to participate. Choosing to participate meant that I needed to go somewhere I had not been before, and I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was such a rich atmosphere. My invitation to the event was a result of supporting the hosting organization. It put me in a room with a group of generous people keen to do something meaningful with what they have been given. It was proverbs 18:16 in action A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.”

So often, we will rise—or fall—to the level of the people you consistently spend time with. Seek out those who make you better, who challenge your thinking, and who inspire you to align your business and your faith with God’s highest calling for your life. Proximity to greatness is never accidental—it’s a choice. And it’s one worth making.
