The Critical Soft Skill that you and your Business need to Develop.

Arguably your greatest strength or weakness is how you think. The way we think shapes our business more than anything else. Romans 12:2 in the bible says that we can be “transformed by the renewing of our mind.” Sometimes, to move forward we must evaluate our thoughts and refresh them. It can be easy to get stuck in a rut in our minds and a fresh or new perspective can energize our business journey.   Craig Groeschel says in his book –

“Our lives are always moving in the direction of our strongest thoughts. What we think shapes who we are.”

It is worth thinking about how you think, Why you think what you think. and how it can be improved.

Critical Thinking

An area of thinking that can be developed and used to great effect in business is critical thinking. Critical thinking goes beyond good instincts, gut feelings, and self-satisfaction. Critical thinking is the ability to examine something from different perspectives, evaluate it, and make informed decisions. It is defined in the dictionary as:

: the act or practice of thinking critically (as by applying reason and questioning assumptions) in order to solve problems, evaluate information, discern biases, etc.

There are many benefits to critical thinking. Some of the most vital areas that I have grown in are 1) Being able to hear other people’s opinions.  The value of a new and different perspective helps me to see blind spots I may have missed, it increases my empathy and allows me to consider other options that didn’t originate with me. 2) It has allowed me to recognize my personal biases and adjust them. 3) It has allowed me to be open to “it’s not working” – rather than continue with an underperforming method or dealing with the symptoms of an issue. It has allowed me to deal with the root causes leading to more long-term success.

Critical thinking is empowering and it allows us and our employees to navigate complexity, solve problems creatively, pursue innovation, make sound decisions, and communicate effectively. According to the World Economic Forum, “analytical thinking, creativity, and flexibility will be among the most sought-after skills” by 2025, yet few companies invest in such training. How can you train your team in this critical skill?
