Reducing Stress in Your Mind, Body, & Business
Reducing Stress in Your Mind, Body, & Business
If you currently work, you probably know what it feels like to be stressed on your job. A few emails start to build up, negotiations become complicated, a department drops the ball on an assignment or an unforeseen emergency presents itself, It can come from anywhere. We can try to eliminate these issues but one thing I have found is that stress and pressure are inevitable at some level.
The World Health Organization defines stress as “a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation.” This mental tension can generate such a strong response in our bodies, that our natural fight or flight instinct activates and operates in a continual state of emergency. This can lead to serious health issues. Stress-related illness accounts for over 20% of healthcare spending worldwide. So how do we Thrive in the midst of stressful environments? The infinite wisdom and kindness of God provide insight and relief from stress.
Perspectives on Pressure
God gives us prayer as a way to experience peace and trust our stress to Him. Many of us in times of stress think of prayer as a last resort rather than our first option. However, when we change the focus of our mind, become intentional with our gratitude, and present our concerns to the Lord, a transfer takes place where we experience transcendent peace and protection for our hearts and minds.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
A Diamond Experience
While it is not healthy to live in a constant state of pressure, there is a positive way to view seasons of trial and to come through them stronger and more refined. It is times that press us, that we develop needed character traits. Traits such as perseverance, endurance, and fortitude.
As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. James 5:11 NIV
Diamonds start as coal that is exposed to great heat and pressure - it's a metaphor for dealing with tough times and coming out stronger. We all go through moments of stress and adversity. But it's in these tough times that we can grow and toughen up. That's why sticking it out and not giving up is so important. When we push through challenges, we end up on the other side as someone stronger, wiser, and better equipped to handle whatever comes next.
