Energy Management is more important than Time Management
In business, we have companies comprised of multiple departments all with the same aim, to grow, protect, and multiply our most important commodities. However, there is one area we often fail to manage that has a giant impact on the success of our work; Our energy level. We have become very efficient at managing our time, but we are not as good at managing our energy. Time is shared equally over 24 hours but this is not the case for energy.
In physics, energy is defined as the capacity to perform work. Energy is what you bring or lack in your job that makes you effective, competent, and inspiring. Recognizing how vital energy management is in your work could mean the difference between burning out or excelling in your current field. Great leaders are aware of their energy levels and adjust when needed. Are you aware of the activities that energize you and the ones that leave you depleted?
Investments and Withdrawals
As Humans, we have several different forms of energy that need to be managed. Your physical energy, your emotional energy, mental and spiritual. Making consistent withdrawals in these areas will leave you feeling depleted, distracted, and deficient. None of these attributes are good for business. Distractions are costly, and the inability to focus prolongs projects and decisions.
Physically it is well-documented that good nutrition, exercise, sleep, and rest are essential to function at optimal levels. Emotionally, we must also build in margins for things that exact a higher toll on our emotions. This could even extend to factors beyond our control, a time of bereavement, concern over a difficult decision, or even strife at home. When Jesus heard that John the Baptist had died, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.” Matthew 14:13. He needed some time to grieve the loss.
Some forms of energy management happen proactively before an event rather than as a result of something. This is something we do in preparation. Think of it like “saving up” to make a big purchase. For example, if you have a big presentation, don’t schedule yourself a late event the night before, build in some downtime, recharge, and prepare yourself mentally. Jesus modeled this also. The bible says that before He preached his sermon on the mount, he got away and prayed. (Luke 6:12-13 and Mark 3:13)
Prayer and time spent with God is some of the most valuable time you can prioritize. It has an extraordinary impact on your energy level. When we are energized in our spirit we become the best versions of ourselves. Jesus recognized this value and often withdrew to prepare, or recover for his ministry. Life and work can be burdensome, sometimes more than we are equipped to carry, Consider this verse:
Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-29 MSGTweet
Time spent with God is never misspent. It is the place that has renewed my energy, clarified my thoughts, and given me vision. These are some of the first areas to suffer when my energy gets low.
“ Spending time with Jesus is not wasted time. It’s the most valuable use of our time “
Pastor Wendell Smith
Another scripture comes to mind in this area:
But those who wait for the Lord will receive new strength. They will lift up their wings and soar like eagles. They will run and not become weary. They will walk and not become tired. Isaiah 40:31 EHV
