Managing your Physical Energy For Business Success
In his book, “The 21 Laws of Irrefutable leadership” John Maxwell describes The Law of the Lid which indicates that “leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness.” The idea recognizes that you cannot exceed your existing capacity. There is a lid that becomes a hinderance to growth and potential. The same is true regarding your physical capacity. Our health can become a limit to our business success. There are many resources regarding healthy living, but a combination of exercise, good diet and sleep are three cornerstones that provide a good foundation to support our calling in the business world.
Our body is a gift from God, part of our responsibility is to be a good steward and to take care of it. This psalm recognizes the marvelous way our body functions:
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

Productivity
One of the benefits of being in good health is improved productivity. Regular exercise boosts your energy levels and stamina, helping you stay focused and alert throughout the day. When you are fit, well rested and have a healthy diet, you are less likely to experience midday slumps or fatigue, which can be a significant obstacle to productivity. You can tackle tasks efficiently, meet deadlines, and make the most of your working hours. Moreover, exercise has been shown to enhance cognitive function. It increases blood flow to the brain, leading to improved memory, sharper problem-solving skills, and better decision-making abilities.
Building Strength in Multiple Ways
Running a successful business often involves facing setbacks, rejection, and tough decisions. Being in shape can enhance your mental resilience, making you better equipped to handle these challenges. Exercise teaches you to push through discomfort and adversity, which can translate into a greater ability to persevere in the face of professional setbacks. The discipline and commitment required to maintain a healthy lifestyle spill over into your professional life. When you set and achieve your health goals, you develop a mindset of determination and persistence that can be applied to your career.
Rest
One of the greatest keys to building physical strength is rest and recovery. Over working a muscle has an inverse effect if you are trying to grow it. The same applies for physical energy. When we overschedule or deprive ourselves of the necessary rest we need, we fail to operate at our optimum level. Our cultural climate has turned “grinding” and overworking at the expense of sleep into a medal of honor. This is a short-term perspective. Build for longevity by getting the sufficient rest you need so that you can bring a high energy to your workday.
Living a healthy lifestyle can have a profound and positive impact on our business life. It enhances productivity, reduces stress, increases confidence, improves mental resilience, and fosters better time management skills. Therefore, managing our physical energy is not just a matter of personal health; it's a strategic move that can lead to greater success and fulfillment in your professional life. Being a good steward of your body through physical health not only honors the gift you have been given, it leaves you feeling great and energized to live life to the fullest!
Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life both for the present and for the future.
